Wine Description
Bérêche & Fils ' Champagne Reflet d'Antan is a living memory in the company's collection of emblematic cuvées. This exceptional Brut comes from the perpetual reserve initiated by Pierre Bérêche, and maintained and passed on by Jean-Pierre Bérêche since 1990. A true thread running through the generations, this Champagne draws its identity from several terroirs renowned for the quality of the vines they harbor: Ludes Premier Cru, Ormes and Trépail on the Montagne de Reims, and Mareuil-le-Port in the Marne Valley. The vines, planted in the 1980s, are rooted in chalky, silty soils with excellent drainage, renowned for the tension and freshness they impart to the grapes. For this 2019 harvest, the blend is based on 40% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 30% Meunier, all aged in demi-muids before a long 36-month cellaring period. Two-thirds of this cuvée is then kept in the cellar for future cuvées. In the end, only 1,287 magnums were produced for this solera champenoise, a choice designed to preserve the wine's integrity and encourage its slow evolution.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : More than a non-vintage cuvée, Bérêche & Fils ' Reflet d'Antan Champagne is a legacy. Its deep, weathered texture is that of a rare Champagne, which brilliantly combines tradition and contemporary precision. It's a meditative cuvée, capable of stirring the senses with its fine balance between maturity and freshness. Its magnum format is particularly conducive to preserving the spirit of transmission and purity it embodies.
On the nose, the complexity of this cuvée immediately catches the eye. Deliciously nuanced aromas of dried and candied fruit, nougat, beeswax, baked apple and warm brioche mingle with the depth of undergrowth and fine spices. The delicate patina of the wood blends perfectly with the evolution of the aromas, whose oxidative side is remarkably balanced.
On the palate, Champagne Brut Reflet d'Antan impresses with its texture: velvety consistency and perfectly balanced density. The material seems to glide over the palate, carried by a controlled warmth and a chalky tension of great delicacy. Flavors of ripe white fruit, marzipan, fresh yeast and sweet spices intertwine in rare harmony. The saline, finely chalky character of the terroir prolongs the finish with a noble, racy stamp. A great Champagne with timeless charm!
