At the heart of the appellation, Volnay 1er Cru Champans de Marquis d'Angerville takes its name from the ancient local dialect, highlighting the ideal position of this sloping terroir, perched mid-slope. The Marquis d'Angerville wine estate owns 3.98 hectares here, spread over two parcels that adjoin the Cailleret climat and extend the full height of the hillside, taking advantage of the terroir's southeasterly exposure. Here, the soil varies according to its position on the slope: very poor and stony at the top, resting on a rocky limestone bed, it becomes deeper and more clayey at the bottom. The slope also ensures effective natural drainage.

Often described as the most complete in the appellation, the wines from this historic climat in northern Burgundy express a fullness and generosity that is the envy of their neighbors. Under the guidance of Guillaume d'Angerville, this cuvée achieves a masterful balance between the solar power of the mid-slope and the silky refinement typical of Volnay. Hand-harvesting ensures that only the ripest, healthiest grapes are picked, which are then completely destemmed before winemaking with indigenous yeasts. This gentle, low-intervention extraction reveals the true expression of each vintage, which is then carefully aged for 18 months in oak barrels to bring out its full potential. The proportion of new barrels is adjusted each year, and limited to a maximum of 20%.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Long considered one of the appellation's leading wines, Volnay 1er cru Champans from Domaine Marquis d'Angerville brilliantly combines finesse and structure. Although it needs 5 to 10 years in the cellar, it is more approachable in its youth than the Clos des Ducs. Exceptionally controlled levels of ripeness enable the Pinot Noir to achieve a rare degree of complexity and refinement, delivering a wine for pleasure par excellence!

The nose is sunny, open from the start, and irresistibly greedy, with ripe red and black fruit. The floral elegance typical of Volnay is evident, with delicately powdered notes of rose petal and peony. Empyreumatic notes reminiscent of cinnamon, licorice and cocoa add depth and relief.

On the palate, this is a full-bodied wine, marked from the outset by a fleshy, opulent body that coats the palate. However, Angerville's signature balance is also present, with serene acidity structuring the flesh to give it length and breathtaking momentum. The tannins are remarkably silky, with a touch more reminiscent of velvet than lace. The brightness of black fruits is underlined by a mineral framework that emerges in the last (long) caudalies of a finish as generous as it is harmonious.
