Robert-Denogent’s “Les Sardines du Chaos” is a cuvée born of a friendship and a slightly crazy idea. Robert-Denogent’s “Les Sardines” are made from various Chardonnay plots on the clay-limestone and clay-silt soils of the Mâconnais region. Yann Bertrand’s “Le Chaos,” on the other hand, is a blend of two plots of old Gamay vines in the Fleurie appellation, grown on poor, well-drained sandy soils. This unique wine embodies the expertise of two winemakers, the blend of two terroirs, and the combination of two grape varieties united in a single cuvée.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Robert-Denogent’s red “Les Sardines du Chaos” is a curiosity born of the imagination of two artisan winemakers. The mineral precision and aromatic clarity of “Les Sardines” contrast with the rich, fruity character of “Chaos,” featuring the fine, silky tannins that are Yann Bertrand’s signature. The result is unpredictable, lively, and unique—much like the two men who crafted it.
On the nose, the white peach and citrus notes of the Mâconnais Chardonnay interact with the ripe cherry and pepper notes of the Fleurie Gamay, creating a bouquet that balances two distinct worlds that ultimately harmonize.
On the palate, the sharp, crisp structure and mineral character of the Sardines carry the savory body and silky tannins of the Chaos into an unexpected balance: fresh, juicy, and lingering. A rare cuvée, born of the collaboration between two winemakers who rank among the finest of their generation.
