Description: Bourgogne Côte d'Or Les Vaux 2023 SSA | Rougeot Père & Fils

The Burgundy Côte d’Or Les Vaux 2023 from Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils is a Pinot Noir from a vineyard located in Meursault, Burgundy. The designation “SSA” means that no sulfur is added during winemaking. This approach requires special attention at every stage to preserve the wine’s fruitiness and balance. This cuvée is thus distinguished by its Côte de Beaune terroir and the estate’s minimalist winemaking philosophy.

Terroir and Grape Variety

The Vaux vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soils typical of the Côte de Beaune. These soils promote good drainage while retaining freshness, giving the Pinot Noir a beautiful balance between structure and finesse. The 60-year-old vines reach deep into the soil and naturally produce concentrated grapes. The 2023 vintage, marked by warmth and excellent ripeness, thus retains a noticeable freshness thanks to the age of the vines.

Viticulture and Winemaking

The estate has been certified organic since 2020 and has been cultivating its vines using Demeter-certified biodynamic methods since 2021. The grapes are harvested by hand and then vinified as whole clusters, including the stems, to impart structure and freshness. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts, without the addition of sulfur at any stage. The wine is then aged for 15 months in barrels—10% of which are new oak—on fine lees to develop texture. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in the barrels. This meticulous approach prioritizes the expression of Pinot Noir and its terroir.

Bourgogne Côte d'Or Les Vaux 2023 SSA | Rougeot Père & Fils: The Sommelier’s Review

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin

Les Vaux 2023 is a Burgundy Côte d’Or that beautifully reflects the character of Meursault in a red wine. Made from 60-year-old vines grown on clay-limestone soils, this Pinot Noir combines rich body with freshness and tension. It can be enjoyed now, but a few years of aging will allow it to develop greater suppleness. Best served at around 16°C in fine wine glasses, decanted for about 30 minutes if desired.

The Nose

The nose reveals notes of fresh red fruits, ranging from morello cherry to raspberry, accented by a slight hint of spice. Peony adds a floral nuance, while a subtle scent of damp stone evokes the plot’s limestone soils, creating a clean and precise profile.

Palate

On the palate, the attack is supple and silky, then the body gains depth with fine, tight tannins that are never harsh. Lively acidity lends energy and structure to the wine. The finish lingers with fruity and mineral notes, featuring a mouth-watering freshness that leaves you wanting more.

The Bourgogne Côte d’Or appellation: what you need to know

Bourgogne Côte d’Or is a regional appellation created in 2017, encompassing wines produced between Dijon and Santenay, in the heart of the Côte-d’Or. More geographically specific than the Bourgogne appellation, it highlights the distinctive characteristics of this wine-growing region. The red wines are made from Pinot Noir, and the white wines from Chardonnay, grown on predominantly clay-limestone soils.

With Les Vaux 2023, we discover another facet of Meursault, a village best known for its white wines. Made from old vines cultivated using biodynamic methods, this Pinot Noir focuses on an authentic expression of the terroir, with a natural, unpretentious style.
