Description: Meursault Sous La Velle 2023 | Rougeot Père & Fils

The Meursault Sous La Velle 2023 from Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils is a rare Burgundy cuvée, sourced from the Sous la Velle vineyard in the town of Meursault. Vinified without added sulfur until bottling, it reflects the estate’s minimalist approach, from the vineyard to the bottle. A precise and expressive wine that allows the terroir to shine.

Terroir and Grape Variety

The Sous la Velle climat rests on clay-limestone soils typical of the Côte de Beaune, which contribute to the wine’s freshness and minerality. Here, the Chardonnay expresses both fullness and tension. The estate’s vines, over 55 years old, send their roots deep into the soil and naturally produce limited yields, giving the wine its full concentration.

Viticulture and Winemaking

The estate cultivates its vines usingcertified biodynamic methods. The grapes are harvested by hand, pressed immediately, and then fermented in French oak barrels using indigenous yeasts, without selected yeasts or any intervention to accelerate the process. The wine is then aged for 18 months on fine lees, without stirring, in barrels, 85% of which are previously used and range in age from one to five years. This aging process minimizes woody notes and allows the terroir to express itself. No exogenous sulfur is used during winemaking, and only a homeopathic dose is added at bottling.

Meursault Sous La Velle 2023 | Rougeot Père & Fils: The Sommelier’s Review

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin

In Meursault, Sous la Velle is not classified as a Premier Cru, but Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils brings out its full potential. The absence of sulfur until bottling requires great precision, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. This approach results in an expressive wine that remains true to its terroir. A few years of aging will allow it to gain harmony and depth. Tasting at around 12°C in fine wine glasses will allow you to fully appreciate its aromas.

The Nose

The nose reveals notes of white flowers and fresh citrus, with a dominant hint of citron. Roasted pear and fresh almond add a delicious touch, while a subtle minerality evokes the limestone soils.

Palate

On the palate, the attack is clean and lively. The 55-year-old vines give the wine beautiful concentration and full-bodied texture, while maintaining a sense of lightness. The acidity provides structure and freshness, leading to a slightly salty finish, typical of the great white wines of the Côte de Beaune. A precise and balanced wine with a long finish.

Meursault: A Benchmark Appellation in the Côte de Beaune

Meursault is one of the most renowned appellations in the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy. Its white wines, made from Chardonnay, combine richness and freshness, with expressions that vary depending on the clay-limestone soils. While its Premier Crus are particularly sought after, the communal Meursaults also reveal beautiful facets of this terroir.

The Sous la Velle vineyard is a fine example. Although not classified as a premier cru, it produces a precise and deep wine, crafted by Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils without the addition of sulfur during vinification. This approach highlights the expression of the terroir and the wine’s minerality. A Meursault well worth discovering.
