Wine Description
Cascina Fornace 's Sreja cuvée comes from the oldest parcel of Nebbiolo in the Roero region of Italy's Piedmont region. Planted just after the Second World War on vertiginous slopes, this historic vineyard flourishes on soil combining limestone and sand, worked exclusively by hand. The Cauda brothers practice biodynamic viticulture, favoring soil balance through permanent grassing and the absence of chemical treatments, to reveal the most authentic expression of this terroir. Fermented in cement tanks with only indigenous yeasts, then aged for two years in old barrels, this Nebbiolo offers exceptional aromatic length, the fruit of patient, respectful ageing. Each vintage is taken out of the cellar when it reaches its fullness, proof of the wine estate's rigorous approach.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Cascina Fornace 's cuvée Sreja embodies the soul of the Cauda brothers, with its delicacy and length. It expresses the minerality of the Roero and the depth of the roots of their old Nebbiolo vines. The fruit of a quest for perfection in which each stage tells the story of a rugged terroir and the unfailing commitment of the Cauda brothers, it is above all a wine of character, whose discreet elegance and quiet strength evoke the wild beauty of the Roero.
On the nose, Sreja reveals a complex bouquet of black plum, blackberry, blackcurrant and redcurrant jam, with a spicy background evoking cloves and nutmeg. A nuance of undergrowth and warm earth adds a seductive tertiary dimension, while a hint of the soft, discreet acidity typical of Nebbiolo balances the whole with a pleasant sensation of freshness.
On the palate, the juicy, lively attack reveals a still young body, carried by fine, slightly tight tannins, promising magnificent ageing potential. The intense black fruit of the nose is enhanced by a touch of licorice. The finish is captivatingly energetic, hinting at a depth that's just waiting to blossom.
