Wine Description

The Terrasses du Larzac wines from Domaine de Montcalmès are exceptional wines, crafted from the appellation’s finest terroirs. Produced by the talented winemaker Frédéric Pourtalié, this wine embodies the unique finesse of the great reds of the South. The vineyard is located in Puéchabon, in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac, where the limestone soils rich in rounded pebbles and the wide daily temperature swings promote slow, harmonious ripening of the South’s iconic grape varieties: Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. Yields are low; organic farming is practiced with a focus on respecting natural balances; and the winemaking process—understated and patient—allows the grapes to express themselves. Ageing in old barrels for two years refines the tannins without masking the purity of the fruit.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin :Domaine de Montcalmès’Terrasses du Larzac is a remarkablecuvée from the . A discreet yet essential figure in the appellation, Frédéric Pourtalié— whose passion for the vines and the terroir shines through in every bottle—has crafted a high-altitude wine with a precise expression deeply rooted in its terroir. Far from the stereotypical “sun-drenched” wines, this vintage displays freshness, density, and balance through a classic blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre—the blend that has made the estate’s reputation.

On the nose, the wine charms with its complex bouquet, evoking the richness of the grape varieties and the diversity of the terroir. Notes of ripe black fruit, wild berries, and garrigue intertwine harmoniously with peppery hints. Deeper nuances of undergrowth and blond tobacco suggest a beautiful evolution.

On the palate, the wine offers a memorable tasting experience. It is an explosion of restrained energy, where the flavors of juicy black fruits mingle with notes of licorice, pepper, and thyme. From this silky texture—where Syrah provides the backbone, Grenache the richness, and Mourvèdre the depth—emerges a delicate and surprisingly fresh finish. A harmonious blend suited for both aging and immediate enjoyment, this Terrasses du Larzac from Domaine de Montcalmès ranks among the great Languedoc wines.
