Description: Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine 2023 | Domaine Gangloff
Domaine Gangloff’s Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine is one of the legendary wines of the Rhône Valley. Yves Gangloff, originally from Alsace, founded this wine estate in 1982 after an apprenticeship at Delas Frères. Together with his wife, Mathilde, they founded Domaine Gangloff in 1992. Five years after their first vintage, they launched La Barbarine. Quickly becoming the wine estate’s flagship cuvée—one that embodies the entire philosophy of this demanding producer—it is produced in quantities of only about 450 cases per vintage.
Terroirs and Grape Varieties
The wine estate cultivates 2.4 hectares in Côte-Rôtie, spread across three lieux-dits: Combard, Mollard, and Rozier. The steep terraced vineyards, characteristic of the northern Rhône, extend over soils composed of a mixture of granite, gneiss, and mica schist: poor, well-drained substrates that concentrate the aromas in each berry by forcing the vine to produce sparingly and dig ever deeper to find nutrients. The blend follows the appellation’s tradition: 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier, co-planted and co-fermented to give the Syrah that delicate floral note and velvety texture that distinguish the great Côte-Rôties.
Viticulture and Winemaking
Yves Gangloff tends his vines using biodynamic practices—without official certification, but with the meticulous attention of a determined winemaker. The harvest is strictly done by hand. Since the 1996 vintage, the grapes have been fully destemmed: a defining choice that steers the wine toward precision and purity rather than rusticity. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts. Ageing lasts between 20 and 23 months in French oak barrels, with a maximum of 40% new oak: just enough to refine the structure without masking the wine’s essence.
Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine 2023 | Domaine Gangloff: The Expert Sommelier’s Opinion
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
La Barbarine is, in my view, one of the most accomplished examples of what Côte-Rôtie can offer when a winemaker refuses to overdo it. The 2023 vintage continues the style that has shaped the legend of Domaine Gangloff: integrity, finesse, and never any heaviness. The window of peak drinking extends from 2032 to 2045: the wine is still young, taut, and needs time. When young, decanting for two hours at 17°C allows you to glimpse what the vintage still holds in store. Those who wait ten years will be richly rewarded.
The Nose
The nose opens with ripe red fruits, ranging from morello cherry to wild blackberry, with a floral delicacy characteristic of Viognier. Mild spices emerge in the background—pepper and a light hint of violet. The overall profile is precise, without excessive ripeness, and perfectly balanced.
Palate
On the palate, the attack is full-bodied and velvety. The wine unfolds with a silky texture, supported by fine, well-integrated tannins. The well-integrated acidity provides a lively tension that keeps the wine beautifully structured. The finish is long and persistent, with that mineral character that the granite and micaceous schist soils leave as a lasting imprint.
Côte-Rôtie: Everything You Need to Know About This Appellation
Côte-Rôtie is undoubtedly the most prestigious northern appellation in the Rhône Valley. Its steep, terraced vineyards overlook the Rhône River, south of Vienne, in the Isère department. The dominant grape variety is Syrah, which may be blended with a small proportion of Viognier, a white grape variety typical of the Northern Rhône that gives the wines their signature floral and velvety character. Côte-Rôtie wines are renowned for their elegance, aromatic complexity, and remarkable aging potential.
Domaine Gangloff’s2023 Barbarine exemplifies the appellation at its finest: a terroir-driven wine, grown on granite and schist soils, vinified with artisanal precision, and one that only fully reveals itself with age. Few cuvées in the appellation achieve this legendary combination of finesse and depth.
