Description: Côte-Rôtie La Sereine Noire 2023 | Domaine Gangloff
Domaine Gangloff’s 2023 Côte-Rôtie La Sereine Noire is an iconic cuvée from a no less legendary wine estate in the northern Rhône. Based in Ampuis, at the heart of the appellation, Yves Gangloff cultivates his vines on the steep slopes that have forged the reputation of Côte-Rôtie. La Sereine Noire is a cuvée as prestigious as it is rare, whose velvety profile reflects, vintage after vintage, the vision of a winemaker committed to precision and restraint.
Terroir and Grape Variety
Planted on the dark soils of the Côte Brune, the Syrah thrives on its complex substrate of granite, schist, and mica schist. These ancient, nutrient-poor, well-draining rocks create controlled water stress that naturally limits yields and concentrates the Syrah’s aromas, while preserving a natural tension. The south-to-southeast exposure of the slopes and the altitude promote uniform ripening of the berries. In 2023, the sunny summer in the northern Rhône produced dense fruit, which the Côte Brune terroir was able to frame with precision.
Viticulture and Winemaking
The 2023 vintage continues the tradition of precision winemaking that has established the wine estate as an icon of the region: rigorous biodynamic practices, strictly hand harvest followed by meticulous sorting and complete destemming, fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks with indigenous yeasts, and no sulfur added before bottling. Ageing takes place in used barrels, with no new oak, to preserve the purity of the grape variety’s expression.
Côte-Rôtie La Sereine Noire 2023 | Domaine Gangloff: The Sommelier’s Review
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
La Sereine Noire is one of those iconic wines that everyone must taste at least once in their lifetime. While it prioritizes purity over power and restraint over exuberance, the terroir of the Côte Brune imparts a mineral backbone to its dense body that lingers all the way to the finish. It is expected to reach its peak drinking period between 2033 and 2050: patience is key. When young, decanting for two hours at 17°C is essential to reveal the noble soul of this Syrah.
The Nose
The nose opens with ripe red fruits—morello cherry and wild blackberry—carried by fresh violet. A touch of sweet spices—pepper and licorice—rounds out the profile. The background remains taut and mineral, true to the dark rocks of the Côte Brune.
Palate
On the palate, the attack is full-bodied and velvety. The body is dense and generous, yet never heavy. The tannins, smooth and silky, envelop the palate without clenching. Precise acidity energizes the whole and extends the finish with beautiful length. The palate closes with a spicy and mineral finish, clean and mouthwatering.
Côte-Rôtie: Everything You Need to Know About This Appellation
Côte-Rôtie is one of the oldest and most prestigious appellations in French wine. Located in the northern part of the Rhône Valley, it stretches across dizzying hillsides, whose steep slopes make mechanization virtually impossible. The subsoil is divided between two major geological formations: the dark, deep granites and mica schists of the Côte Brune, which produce the most structured wines best suited for aging, and the lighter sands and silts of the Côte Blonde. Syrah reigns supreme here, often blended with a small percentage of Viognier in traditional blends.
Domaine Gangloff’s Côte-Rôtie La Sereine Noire is a pure expression of the Côte Brune. It embodies the soul of this challenging terroir, elevated by the skill of a master winemaker.
