The 2025 Clos des Papes White Châteauneuf-du-Pape reflects Paul Vincent Avril’s unique approach . Asthe heirto a long family tradition in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the man named Winemaker of the Year 2026 by the RVF never ceases to blend, vintage after vintage, the richness of the terroirs and the diversity of the appellation’s grape varieties. In fact, this single-vineyard cuvée brings together all six authorized white grape varieties: Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Picardan for structure and density; Clairette, Picpoul, and Bourboulenc for freshness and liveliness.
The vineyards stretch across soils of rounded pebbles and deep sand, typical of the Southern Rhône, where the microclimate and exposure promote optimal ripeness while maintaining tension in the berries. The pebbles store the day’s heat and release it at night, promoting slow and steady ripening, while the sandy soils drain away any excess moisture. This natural tension is preserved through meticulously controlled winemaking and aging.
For several generations, the Avril family has been committed to minimizing unnecessary interventions, and the estate is operated entirely according to organic viticulture practices. Paul Vincent Avril ensures that the natural rhythm of the vines is respected and that gentle, natural winemaking practices are followed: After hand-harvesting and whole-cluster pressing, all grape varieties ferment together in tanks, using only the native yeasts present on the berries. There is no malolactic fermentation: the natural acidity is preserved intact. For this white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, six months of aging on fine lees in concrete and stainless steel tanks—without any oak—harmonizes the blend and preserves the purity of expression of the terroirs of the southern Rhône Valley.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
The Clos des Papeswhite Châteauneuf-du-Pape ranks among the appellation’s most remarkable wines. This wine masterfully combines density and freshness, power and finesse, while remaining true to the estate’s identity. Each vintage of this Clos des Papes white expresses the subtleties of the terroir and the signature style of Paul Vincent Avrilin a unique way , offering natural elegance even in its youth, as well as aging potential of a good fifteen years! It will reach its peak between 2030 and 2040: decanting it for an hour while young will be enough to open it up right now. Serve in fine Burgundy glasses at 12°C.
The Nose
The nose is distinguished by a particularly floral character, where honeysuckle, acacia, and hawthorn blend with especially pleasant anise notes, lending the bouquet addedcomplexity . Fresh citrus notes and a hint of orchard fruit add a captivating energy to the overall profile.
Palate
The creamy texture is immediately structured by invigorating acidity—preserved by the absence of malolactic fermentation— which balances the richness of flavors of vine peach , fresh grapefruit, star anise, and white flowers. The body is elegant, marked by a salty minerality that refines the aromas and hints at the full aging potential of this white Clos des Papes. The finish prolongs the pleasure with a peppery, mouth-watering persistence full of freshness, which immediately calls for a second glass.
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, in the southern Rhône Valley, is world-renowned for its powerful reds. Its whites are fewer in number but no less remarkable, with an aging potential that rivals that of certain great white Burgundies. The varied soils (rounded pebbles, sand, clay, and limestone) and the mistral wind, which dries and ventilates the vineyards, create conditions conducive to whites that are both generous and crisp. There are six authorized grape varieties: Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, and Picardan.
