Wine Description

In the Côte de Nuits, in the heart of a village surrounded by Grands Crus, Domaine Georges Roumier 's Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras illustrates the singular identity of a climat that borders on the very best. Situated at the foot of the slope, this 1er Cru is one of the most famous in the area, separated from the famous Clos de Vougeot only by an easily crossed path. The half-century-old Pinot Noir vines are planted on limestone marl rich in marine fossils, whose imprint gives the wine its characteristic mineral texture. South-east exposure and controlled yields concentrate the substance of the old vines, which the wine estate meticulously nurtures using organic viticulture methods. Hand harvesting and subsequent sorting ensure that only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are picked. Over 70% of the grapes are destemmed before being vatted for natural fermentation, guided exclusively by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 16 months in multi-wine oak barrels, of which no more than a quarter is new wood, before bottling without fining or filtration.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Georges Roumier 's Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is a benchmark among lovers of great Burgundy wines. The combination of measured extraction and wood-free ageing preserves the signature of its privileged terroir. The airy, mineral profile of the site fleshes out the fruity, floral character of Chambolle Musigny with enchanting freshness. Already pleasant today, it will age admirably over the next fifteen years.

On the nose, this Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru exudes suave aromas of ripe red fruit, with a blend of cherry, raspberry and redcurrant. The minerality of the limestone underlies an impressive floral bouquet with springtime accents of wild rose, peony and lilac.

On the palate, the tannins melt with finesse into the supple, silky body. Flavors of small red berries and cherry pit are long-lasting, with a mineral hint of damp chalk on the finish, while a floral aftertaste lingers on the palate.
