The Ostertag wine estate is, first and foremost, a family story. Over the course of three generations, this family has elevated the wine estate to the very pinnacle of the region. Arthur Ostertag, André’s son, is the current winemaker. Like his father, he crafts balanced Alsatian wines that are both refined and complex. He is yet another gifted winemaker who continually adapts his wines to the times, taking into account climate changes and new insights.
André, a Master of Viticulture
André was just 21 years old when his father, Adolphe, handed him the keys to the cellar and the Ostertag wine estate. Adolphe had been shaping his vineyard since the 1960s and never stopped seeking to acquire plots in the finest terroirs of Epfig and the surrounding area.
Shortly after arriving at the wine estate, André Ostertag distinguished himself through the originality of his approach, guided by a keen sense of precision. He crafts his wines much like a sculptor works with stone and does not hesitate to let his instincts lead the way. In particular, he has chosen to age some of his cuvées in the Burgundian style and to restore the Sylvaner—so often relegated to the status of a everyday table wine—to its former glory.
André Ostertag has also been a proponent of biodynamics since the late 1990s. Through this method, he seeks to bring out the most complex nuances and express the energy of the vine and the terroir.
Through his cuvées, André creates works of art that celebrate the union of fruit and terroir. These terroirs are scattered across the towns of Epfig, Nothalten, Itterswiller, Ribeauvillé, and Albé, each with its own distinct identity.
Whether it’s Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, or Sylvaner, André and his son Arthur prioritize the creation of wines that are straightforward, deep, and harmonious.
Arthur’s succession is now official
After a stint at the legendary Comte Lafon in Meursault, Arthur Ostertag found his footing at the family wine estate, eventually taking the reins for his first vintage in 2018—and impressing his father along the way with his bold choices!
