Jérôme Bressy: The Art of a Great Winemaker
The Gourt de Mautens wine estate is located in the Vaucluse region. It was built from the ground up by the family of Jérôme Bressy, an unconventional winemaker who, at just 23 years old, convinced his father to convert the wine estate to organic farming. Since 1989, the Gourt de Mautens wine estate has tended its vineyards and crafted its wines with deep respect for the environment, with the goal of producing exceptional wines from the Rhône Valley.
Jérôme Bressy knew from an early age that he wanted to produce great wines, even though at the time the family wine estate’s entire production was destined for the cooperative winery. It was only when he took over the wine estate that he was able to fully dedicate his talent to the terroir, notably by leaving the Rasteau appellation, which required him to blend local grape varieties he considered unsuitable for his terroirs.
A Fabulous Terroir with a Diverse Planting Mix
Over time, the wine estate has become a veritable ampelographic conservatory, bringing together well-known grape varieties such as Marsanne and Clairette, as well as much rarer ones like Picardan—to name just the white varieties.
Yields are kept to a minimum in order to achieve the highest possible quality, regardless of the vintage. This approach is taken to the extreme, as the wine estate barely reaches 10 hectoliters per hectare across its total area of 13 hectares. Each year, only 17,000 bottles are produced for the entire world. These are rare wines, but above all magnificent ones, which reveal immense richness and great complexity over time.
While nature’s work remains the top priority, ageing also plays an essential role in Jérôme Bressy’s philosophy. Nothing is left to chance. The countless experiments conducted over the years and the diversity of winemaking methods now allow him to adapt to each vintage and choose the bottle sizes best suited to the wine’s characteristics. A true artisan, attuned to his vines and his grapes. Undoubtedly one of the finest winemakers of his generation.
