Le Roc des Anges is a very young wine estate in Roussillon, having been founded in 2001 by Marjorie Gallet, a woman who became a winemaker out of passion. She began by training with the greatest winemakers of the Côte Rôtie, such as Cuilleron and Pierre Gaillard. She then trained under the “king of Roussillon” at the time: Gérard Gauby. She ultimately decided to settle in a small corner of the Catalan coast, in a tiny village near Montner. Her husband, who also comes from the wine world—having previously served as estate manager at the famous Mas Amiel—joined her in 2008. Following that, a wonderful story began, and the Le Roc des Anges wine estate started to make a name for itself.
The wine estate’s growth is largely driven by its focus on local grape varieties such as Carignan Blanc, Grenache Gris, and Macabeu for the whites; and Carignan Rouge, Grenache Noir, and Serine for the reds.
It is through the refined style of their white and red wines that Marjorie Gallet and her husband Stéphane set themselves apart from other winemakers. They are also committed to highlighting their respect for nature, which is so dear to them. That is why they quickly decided to transition their vineyards to organic farming and work according to biodynamic principles.
The result is remarkable: their efforts have breathed new life into their poor soils, especially for the old vines that are an integral part of the wine estate (50% are over 70 years old).
When it comes to winemaking, the winemaking couple shares the same vision: very little intervention, minimal use of new oak, and, above all, a quest for balance. The use of demi-muids is a natural choice to achieve the best possible balance between freshness and the expression of the terroir. Each plot is precisely defined and vinified separately to produce a range of wines that is as consistent as possible.
Finesse, elegance, and precision are the words that best describe the wines of the Le Roc des Anges wine estate.
