Long description
Maison Stéphan is a small family-run wine estate that began viticulture in 1991 with just two hectares of Côte Rôtie vines. Jean-Michel Stéphan learned from great winemakers, including the famous Jean-Paul Brun, who taught him how to bring out terroir and energy in a wine.
It is with talent that the Maison Stéphan today produces exceptional Côte-Rôtie wines .
Work in the vineyard is of paramount importance to Jean Michel Stéphan, who insists on preserving traditions and managing his vines with the greatest respect for the living. That's why he chooses to work with horses whenever possible, otherwise everything else is done by hand. He is fortunate to have some of the oldest vines in Sereine, an old Syrah variety, some of which are 120 years old.
His terroirs are composed of gneiss and granite on steep slopes and terraces.
At the winery, Jean Michel Stephan's winemaking is truly unique in the sector, as he is one of the few to produce natural wines in the Côte Rôtie appellation and for all his cuvées. No sulfur is added throughout the winemaking process, to preserve the energy emanating from the grapes and thus from the vines.
Finally, during ageing, the wines are neither fined nor filtered, and are aged for 18 months in old barrels.
All cuvées are particularly successful: Syrah, Côte Rôtie Les Binardes, Coteaux de Bassenon, Coteaux de Tupin and the So' Brune cuvée , great wines from the northern Rhône Valley.
