The Burgundy Côte d’Or Les Grandes Gouttes 2024 comes from the vineyard of the same name, located in Meursault. Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils, a 13-hectare family-owned estate, has been led since 2016 by Pierre-Henri Rougeot, who has breathed new life into the estate. Committed to viticulture that respects the terroir, he began the transition to organic farming in 2020, followed by a shift to biodynamic farming in 2021. Vinified without the addition of sulfites prior to bottling, this cuvée fully reflects this approach and allows the character of the terroir to shine through.
The Les Grandes Gouttes vineyard site rests on clay-limestone soils typical of Meursault. The Chardonnay vines, planted between 1950 and 1980, cover approximately one hectare. Over time, their roots have grown deep, and their age naturally helps limit yields. As a result, the grapes gain in concentration while allowing the terroir to fully express itself.
The grapes are harvested by hand and then fermented using indigenous yeasts naturally present on their skins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels, which softens the acidity while preserving the wine’s freshness. The wine is then aged for 18 months in barrels that have previously held between one and ten wines, without stirring. This approach ensures a fresh and balanced wine, without excessive roundness or oakiness. The terroir thus expresses itself naturally, without artifice.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
This cuvée holds a special place in the estate’s lineup. Made from 70-year-old vines, this Chardonnay is vinified without added sulfites until bottling, when only a homeopathic dose is added after 18 months of aging to ensure the wine’s stability over time. The result is a fresh, straightforward wine that fully expresses its terroir. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for a few years. To serve, let it breathe in a decanter for about 30 minutes, bring it to 12°C, and —most importantly—use attractive glasses.
The Nose
The nose opens with delicate notes of white flowers and ripe pear, with a hint of fresh almond. A subtle limestone minerality rounds out the profile. The expression remains delicate and full of finesse.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with well-balanced acidity. The body is full-bodied without being heavy, thanks to the concentration from the old Chardonnay vines. The 18 months of barrel aging lend it finesse while preserving its freshness. The salty, mineral finish elegantly prolongs the tasting experience, with beautiful balance.
The Bourgogne Côte d’Or appellation, created in 2017, encompasses wines from the communes of the Côte d’Or, stretching from Dijon to Santenay. The vines grow on soils that are primarily clay-limestone and limestone, which contribute to the wines’ freshness and minerality. Among the white wines, Chardonnay offers beautiful tension and a precise expression of the terroir.
Domaine Rougeot’s “Les Grandes Gouttes” perfectly exemplifies this potential. Through a combination of old vines, biodynamic practices, and natural winemaking, this wine fully expresses its terroir. It is a Burgundy that stands out for the care taken with both the vines and the wine, and for its distinct identity.
