Wine Description

The KalkundKiesel red cuvée from the Claus Preisinger wine estate is a blend of 50% Blaufränkisch and 50% Pinot Noir grown on a terroir of limestone and pebbles. The vineyards face southeast and benefit from a superb breeze that allows the grapes to ripen slowly.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Reflecting its terroir, the KalkundKiesel red cuvée reveals a strong personality with a density unique to this region. The wine’s power and structure give it a more robust and rustic character. Over time, the tannins soften, resulting in a wine with greater elegance and finesse while retaining the wild notes characteristic of the terroir.

On the nose, it’s very different from what we’re used to tasting in Austria. Notes of leather, cloves, and wild mushrooms blend together to create an undeniably uniquearomatic intensity. It’s a characterful nose that clearly calls for red meats or even game.

On the palate, it is refined, with a beautiful balance between body, concentration, and tannins. The structure on the palate is elegant. We find the rustic aromas characteristic of this sun-drenched terroir of limestone and pebbles—the famous “Kalk und Kiesel.” A perfect illustration of Claus Preisinger’s expertise.
