Wine Description
Cyril Courvoisier’s Le Colombier is the wine estate’s most unexpected cuvée—one that initially baffles but ultimately wins you over. It is a Gamay red wine from the northern Rhône Valley, where Syrah usually reigns supreme. Le Colombier is grown on the alluvial soils of the region. Cyril Courvoisier has undertaken a monumental effort to breathe new life into these long-neglected plots, all while preserving the surrounding ecosystem—including hedgerows, groves, and stone walls—as part of a certified organic farming practice. In the cellar, the grapes are processed whole-bunch, with short extractions and macerations.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Cyril Courvoisier’s Le Colombier is a wine with dazzling fruitiness. There are no harsh tannins here; the fruit is supple, luscious, and incredibly approachable, leaning more toward black fruits and pepper than its Beaujolais counterparts. Ageing and bottle rest have both rounded out and refined it. The tannins are well-integrated, and the palate is pleasant and charming.
On the nose, balance and freshness characterize this wine, with aromas of flowers, blackcurrant, and black tea. The overall impression is one of delicate expression that remains true to its region and surprises with its lightness in a landscape dominated by Syrah.
On the palate, it is supple, fresh, and elegant, perfectly suited for spring and summer culinary pairings. Smooth and graceful, it features well-integrated tannins and a fresh, easy-drinking finish.
