The Blanc Etc 2023 is one of the most distinctive wines from Domaine Didier Dagueneau. Classified as Pouilly-Fumé in its early vintages, this cuvée—formerly known as “Blanc Fumé de Pouilly”—was deliberately reclassified as a Vin de France in 2017. A bold move by this great Loire estate, which speaks volumes about the family’s philosophy: here, the wine’s authenticity takes precedence over the label. Since Didier Dagueneau’s passing in 2008, his son Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau has been safeguarding his father’s legacy with the same high standards that have built the estate’s reputation. A gateway to the world of Dagueneau, this Blanc Etc 2023 is nonetheless a wine of character, crafted with the same care as the estate’s grand cuvées.
The vineyards are located around Saint-Andelain, in the heart of the historic Pouilly-Fumé region. The clay-siliceous soils, interspersed with veins of calcareous marl and flint, form a particularly well-draining substrate, whose nutrient-poor nature shapes the wines’ minerality. Here, the Sauvignon Blanc reveals its fruity richness less readily, favoring an expression full of tension. Flint, in particular, imparts to the wines that sharp minerality with smoky notes so characteristic of the appellation. On these plots, the young vines give the cuvée a vibrant freshness that is accessible even in its youth.
The estate cultivates its vines according to biodynamic principles, without official certification but with exemplary rigor. Yields are deliberately kept very low, and the harvest is entirely hand-picked. Once the grapes have been carefully sorted, fermentation takes place in barrels using indigenous yeasts, after which the wine is aged for 12 months in barrels. This aging process enriches the wine, imparting texture and body without dulling the terroir’s integrity or the grape variety’s fruitiness.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
Here is a Sauvignon Blanc that, after twelve months on the lees, has lost none of its integrity. The 2023 vintage gives it remarkable energy: the fruit is crisp, the mineral tension is ever-present, and the drinking pleasure is crystal clear. As we’ve come to expect from Dagueneau, the “entry-level” label applies only to the price: this wine is anything but ordinary. A brief decanting of about twenty minutes fully reveals its profile, and fine Burgundy glasses will showcase it even better. It will reach its peak between 2028 and 2032, but it’s already a great pleasure to drink, served between 10 and 12°C.
The Nose
The nose opens with lively citrus notes, softened by a hint of white peach. In the background, a subtle hint of autolysis hints at aging on the lees, while a faint smoky note evokes the flinty terroir. The overall impression exudes the harmony and elegance of a perfectly crafted cuvée.
Palate
The palate oscillates between the liveliness of the acidity and a delicately creamy texture: the Dagueneau balance. The finish, full of minerality and citrus zest, unfolds its salty persistence with a savory depth so rare that it’s impossible not to take another sip.
