Wine Description
While the wine estate’s reds have achieved cult status, the Languedoc Blanc de Montcalmès embodies another facet of the Languedoc—one of purity and restraint. Less well-known but just as refined, this signature white wine stands out as one of the appellation’s finest thanks to the meticulous work of Frédéric Pourtalié, the artisan of the quality revival of the great wines of southern France. Made from a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, the Montcalmès white draws its character from the garrigue terroirs surrounding Aniane and Puéchabon. The limestone soils, the climate tempered by altitude, and diligent organic viticulture give rise to a wine of balance and depth. Winemaking is carried out gently, with patient ageing in used barrels for nearly two years, which adds complexity and depth without masking the fruit’s expression.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Languedoc Blanc de Montcalmès stands out for its lovely tension and aromatic intensity. The optimal ripeness of the grapes is striking, but it is above all its texture that captivates: a mineral, almost chalky tension that gives structure to a wine that is both full-bodied and vibrant. Frédéric Pourtalié offers us a masterclass in Mediterranean elegance. This is a white wine of balance and depth, both refined and persistent. Far from being flashy, it captivates with its poise, its natural charm, and its aging potential.
The nose blends a profusion of white flowers, ripe yellow fruits, and citrus zest. A hint of exotic fruits and a touch of honey reminiscent of frangipani blossoms add extra brilliance to this already extraordinary bouquet.
On the palate, the attack is clean and direct, supported by a full-bodied, flavorful structure. The Roussanne contributes a creaminess reminiscent of beeswax, balanced by the Marsanne’s slightly chalky, mineral character. Aromas of peach and juicy pear mingle with hints of wildflower honey in a blend brimming with sweetness. The long, briny, and precise finish reveals subtle bitter notes that call for fine dining.
