Wine Description
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Cailleret de Morey-Coffinet takes its name from its stony terroir - "cailleret" meaning "stony ground". North of the Chassagne Montrachet finage and bordering Puligny Montrachet, this climat adjoins the Premier Cru Les Chevenottes and the famous 1er Cru Le Cailleret de Puligny. Perched at an altitude of around 300 metres, this steeply-sloping hillside rolls out its shallow, stony clay-limestone soils , from which the parent rock sometimes outcrops. This particularly draining, mineral terroir lends a distinctive personality to the Chardonnay it harbors. Domaine Morey Coffinet cultivates two parcels in this climate, planted in the early 1980s. The first, at the top of the hillside, has a thin, very stony soil, while the second, lower down, benefits from a richer, deeper substratum with some clay.
The grapes are hand-harvested to guarantee their integrity. In the cellar, winemaking is carried out with particular care: gentle pressing and natural fermentation in oak barrels. Ageing lasts 14 to 16 months, in oak barrels of which 30 to 50% are new, to bring structure to the wine without dominating its expression.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Morey-Coffinet 's Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru En Cailleret perfectly illustrates the precision and minerality characteristic of Chassagne Montrachet 1er crus. The combination of its different soils gives the wine remarkable complexity and balance between fullness, depth and vertical tension.
The bouquet is both elegant and complex, revealing aromas of ripe white fruits such as pear and peach, with hints of apricot, quince and a touch of orange marmalade. Very fresh floral notes of hawthorn and acacia mingle with the pastry structure of the ageing, while a stony minerality brings a most appetizing tension.
On the palate, the generous body offers an unctuous, enveloping texture. Baked fruit flavors blend harmoniously with the candied citrus and sweet spice notes of ageing. There's a real dynamism to this wine, whose generosity is carried from start to finish by a saline minerality that stimulates the taste buds and deliciously prolongs the tasting experience.
