Wine Description

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru Clos Saint Jean de Morey-Coffinet occupies a small, walled plot of 20 ares, historically dedicated to Pinot Noir. Close to the rocky spurs of Solutré and Vergissones, its clay-limestone soils, south-east exposure and mid-slope position provide ideal conditions for the grape variety. The wine estate's vines, planted as early as 1978 and now an average of forty years old, are cultivated using certifiedorganicmethods , with particular attention paid to soil health. Hand-harvesting, natural winemaking using indigenous yeasts and ageing for 14 to 16 months in oak barrels combine to produce a genuine gourmet cuvée, particularly delicate.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Clos Saint Jean is a special climat in Burgundy, since it has only been planted with Pinot Noir for about a century. But since the popularity of Côte de Beaunewhite wines , many winemakers have decided to replace the grape variety with Chardonnay. For my part, I've always been very fond of the red cuvées from this climat, which I feel reflect the terroir's identity. This cuvée is a classic Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru, particularly representative of Thibault Morey's immense talent.

On the nose, notes of red berries shine through, creating a veritable bouquet of crisp freshness. Subtle hints of violets and dried rose petals, embellished by a hint of acidity, add freshness. Hints of white pepper and licorice appear as the wine opens up.

On the palate, the velvety texture is sculpted by fine, perfectly integrated tannins. The red fruit flavors stretch elegantly over a fresh, salivating framework, which gradually opens up to a persistent yet subtle minerality until the exemplary straightforward finish, imbued with the limestone of the parcel. This Chassagne Montrachet rouge 1er cru from Domaine Morey Coffinet perfectly combines the finesse of its terroir with the elegance of the house style.
