The Gigondas Le Gour 2024 is the flagship wine of Domaine du Gour de Chaulé. It comes from a 0.8-hectare plot located on the hillsides of Gigondas. This historic estate, founded in the 19th century, is now run by Paul Fumoso, who took over from his mother, Stéphanie. While wines from this appellation are often blends of grapes from multiple plots, Le Gour focuses on expressing the character of a single terroir. Produced in limited quantities, it captivates with its unique character and is in high demand.
The Le Gour plot sits on safres, crumbly limestone sands typical of certain southern Rhône hillsides. Well-drained and nutrient-poor, this soil encourages deep root growth and produces wines of great finesse. The 80-year-old Grenache vines naturally yield low harvests, contributing to the wine’s concentration and precision. The cuvée is composed of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault—a blend that accurately expresses the character of this vineyard.
Certified organic since 2020, the estate favors a minimally interventionist approach. The grapes are harvested by hand, and 25% of the clusters are vinified whole—a proportion adjusted each year based on the grapes’ ripeness. This method preserves the fruit’s freshness and lends finesse to the tannins. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts, and the wine is then aged for 18 months in a concrete egg, without any oak aging. Finally, it is bottled without fining or filtration. Under Paul Fumoso’s guidance, the focus is on gentle extraction, allowing the terroir to express itself with precision and elegance.
