Description: Gigondas .16 Le Chemin de Saint Gens 2024 | Gour de Chaulé

The Gigondas .16 Le Chemin de Saint Gens 2024 is one of Domaine du Gour de Chaulé’s most exclusive vintages. Located in Gigondas, in the heart of the Rhône Valley, this family-run estate is led by Stéphanie Fumoso, who took it over in 2007 and was joined by her son Paul in 2018. Together, they cultivate 10 hectares spread across 23 plots, paying particular attention to each terroir. This cuvée reflects their pursuit of precision and their expertise.

Terroir and Grape Variety

This cuvée is made from old Grenache vines, averaging 80 years of age. Deeply rooted inred clay and limestone soils, they benefit from a terroir that retains moisture while ensuring good drainage. The limestone imparts freshness and a lovely mineral tension, while the age of the vines contributes to the wine’s complexity. The result is a well-balanced Gigondas, where the Grenache expresses itself with finesse and maturity.

Viticulture and Winemaking

Certified organic since 2020, the estate prioritizes meticulous care, from the vineyard to the cellar. The grapes are harvested by hand, and some of the clusters are left whole to add structure to the wine. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 18 months in concrete eggs, a vessel that preserves the fruit’s freshness without imparting woody notes. This gentle aging process allows the terroir to express itself naturally.

Gigondas .16 Le Chemin de Saint Gens 2024 | Gour de Chaulé: the sommelier’s review

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin

Within the Domaine du Gour de Chaulé range, this cuvée stands out for its single-vineyard origin, its old Grenache vines, and its aging in concrete eggs, which preserves the purity of the fruit. The 2024 vintage highlights all the finesse of this grape variety, without masking its expression with woody notes. To fully enjoy it, let it breathe for an hour and serve it around 16°C in attractive glasses. This elegant Grenache also has excellent aging potential.

The Nose

The nose reveals aromas of morello cherry and wild blackberry, accompanied by a delicate note of violet. Hints of pepper and licorice add a touch of depth, while a subtle limestone minerality evokes the wine’s terroir of origin.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is generous and full-bodied, with a dense texture that is never heavy. The tannins are fine and silky, while a lovely freshness provides balance and length. The finish lingers pleasantly, blending notes of ripe fruit with a hint of minerality, resulting in a harmonious and elegant whole.

Gigondas: Everything You Need to Know About This Appellation

Located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, Gigondas is an appellation in the southern Rhône renowned for its Grenache-dominated red wines. Its varied soils—a mix of red clay, limestone, and sandstone—along with the elevation and winds, contribute to wines that are full-bodied yet fresh and elegant.

The Gigondas .16 Le Chemin de Saint Gens 2024 from Domaine du Gour de Chaulé is a fine example of this. Made from old vines and aged in concrete eggs, it elegantly expresses the character of its terroir, balancing the richness of Grenache with mineral freshness. A precise and balanced Gigondas, true to its origins.
