The history of the La Taille aux Loups wine estate does not begin with a winemaker, but with a conviction. It was Jacky Blot ’s deeply held and visionary belief that the forgotten hillsides of Montlouis-sur-Loire harbored a potential for nobility capable of rivaling the greatest white wines of the Loire—and , why not, of France. When he took over the wine estate in the 1990s—then a modest 7-hectare operation—he transformed it into a laboratory of precision, respect for natural balance, and the pursuit of great wine. Bold to the very end, he chose to focus exclusively on Chenin, which he cultivated organically and conducted with plot-based winemaking and extended ageing. It was a winning bet, as he would restore this Loire appellation to its former glory.
Behind this renaissance lies a simple philosophy: letting the terroir speak through the vines. La Taille aux Loups now covers nearly 25 hectares, located primarily in Montlouis-sur-Loire, with a few plots in Vouvray. Each plot is tended with artisanal precision and vinified separately to most accurately reflect the uniqueness of the soils, whether they are clay-limestone, flint, or clay-flint. Here, there is no artificial pursuit of style: the winemaker’s touch guides the terroir’s expression without forcing it. Jacky Blot passed this approach on with the same high standards to his son, Jean-Philippe Blot, who now heads the wine estate, carrying on his father’s pioneering spirit while infusing it with a new sensibility following his father’s sudden death in May 2023.
The cuvées offer a panorama of the landscapes along the banks of the Loire. In Montlouis-sur-Loire, Clos de Mosny—from a south-facing, exclusive plot of old Chenin vines—reveals a character that is both sunny and taut, capable of aging with nobility over the years. Alongside it, the Venise cuvée, made from vines planted on sandy and light clay soils, offers a more airy and almost crystalline expression of Chenin. The Triple Zéro, also available as a rosé, is a naturally sparkling wine with no added sugar, reflecting the purity of the fruit. Other cuvées, such as Rémus and the Cuvée des Loups, illustrate the diversity and richness of the terroirs cultivated by the wine estate.
In Vouvray, Les Hauts de Husseau takes on a more chalky and sun-kissed character. The single-vineyard cuvées Clos Michet and Clos de la Bretonnière further deepen this expression: here, each bottle tells a story of place, vintage, and patience.
At La Taille aux Loups, we don’t speak of technique, but of resonance. Each cuvée is an echo of the terroir from which it comes, unvarnished and uncompromising.
