The Domaine de l'Écu is a driving force in the Muscadet appellation , reflecting its dynamism as a whole. At the head of this wine estate is Fred Niger, who took over from Guy Bossard , one of the region's leading figures and pioneers of biodynamic viticulture. Fred Niger' s meticulous attention to detail and thoughtfulness have taken him to the very top of the Muscadet world. Today, he is considered one of the appellation's finest producers.
The Domaine de l'Ecu is run by Fred Niger and his wife Claire, who helps him work the vineyards, most of which are planted on granite and gneiss soils.
Depending on the plot, the personality of the wine is very different for several obvious reasons linked to the terroir but also to the winemaking style of the parcels. In particular, Fred Niger has chosen to plant non-local grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc, in order to produce micro-cuvées that are at the margins of the more classic local style , but always in keeping with the terroir. The relationship between terroir, grape variety and winemaker is obvious when you taste the wines from the Domaine de l'Ecu.
The wine estate is also a forerunner in biodynamic viticulture, having started in 1998. Recently, Fred and Claire Niger built a new winery to bring even greater precision to their wines. Everything has been thought out down to the last millimeter, right down to the neutral energy impact.
The cellar was dug right out of the rock, where an extraordinary atmosphere reigns. The amphorae in which they vinify a large proportion of their wines are impregnated with energy and in their element.
Each of the cuvées created by Fred and Claire Niger is the result of a great deal of thought and meticulous attention to detail. The cuvée Orthogneiss, their first wine, is a concentrate of minerality. The cuvée Taurus, a Muscadet aged 20 months on lees, is a real gem. The atypical Faust cuvée, made from Chardonnay, is now one of the wine estate's must-haves.
The reds are also real successes, even though few winemakers produce them in this sector. The cuvée Méphisto is a Cabernet Franc that rivals the finest Anjou wines. Another Cabernet Franc, Invictus, is for me one of the finest Cabernet de Loire, without a doubt. And then there's the cuvée Ange, a Pinot Noir from the Loire region produced in just 2600 units. And last but not least, the cuvée Vitae, the last Cabernet in the selection, has enormous ageing potential and is a great gourmet wine.
Most of the cuvées produced by the Domaine de l'Ecu are the result of micro-winemaking, and production rarely exceeds 3,000 bottles per cuvée. These are wines of discovery, of soulful wines, of memories that leave no one indifferent.
