Wine Description

Granite du Domaine de L'Écu is one of those cuvées which very early on affirmed Claire and Frédéric Niger 's desire to break away from aromatic standards. In the heart of the Nantes vineyards, Domaine de l'Ecu cultivates a 3-hectare plot with a south-western exposure, resting on outcropping two-mica granite, covered with shallow stony soils that naturally force the fifty-year-old Melon de Bourgogne vines to make a constant effort to draw nutrients. The decision to declare the cuvée a Vin de France aims to preserve total freedom in winemaking choices and in the expression of the place. Committed to organic farming since 1975, and certified Demeter (biodynamic) since 1998, the wine estate was quick to renounce modern mechanical processes likely to standardize the profiles of its wines. Yields are deliberately limited, the grapes are harvested by hand and gravity-fed to avoid any brutalization of the material, before being pressed as a whole-bunch without settling. In line with our refusal to standardize, ageing on lees in underground concrete vats avoids the use of modern thermoregulation processes, allowing the grapes to age at their own pace rather than forcing them towards a calibrated expression.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Domaine de l'Écu 's Granite cuvée is a "rock wine" before being a fruit wine. Where Orthogneiss plays on depth and substance, Granite sculpts a clear line whose mineral energy is almost razor-sharp, making the soil immediately legible. The crystalline base of two-mica granite, a remnant of the ancient Hercynian chain, imparts a tension and noble austerity not found elsewhere. Uncluttered by ageing, the cuvée displays a purity and precision rarely seen in the Nantes vineyards.

The nose immediately reveals the mineral character of granite, with notes of flint, gunflint and fresh citrus. Scents of oyster shell and white flowers enhance the whole, whose saline frankness calls for the table.

The palate is straightforward and slender, with the streamlined mineral tension of granite immediately apparent. Salinity structures and balances the slightly oily texture that coats the palate, and prolongs the crystalline purity of citrus, wet rock and iodine flavors. The saline, nervous aftertaste lingers on the finish with panache.
