Description: Gigondas .1871 Les Jardinières 2024 | Gour de Chaulé
The Gigondas .1871 Les Jardinières 2024 is a cuvée from Domaine du Gour de Chaulé, a family-owned estate founded in 1900 by Eugène Bonfils and now managed by Paul Fumoso. The estate spans 10 hectares divided into 24 plots in the heart of the Gigondas appellation. True to its terroir, it prioritizes a precise plot-by-plot approach and has been certified organic since 2020.
Terroir and Grape Varieties
The Les Jardinières vines grow in calcareous marl, a terroir that encourages deep root growth and imparts freshness and structure to the wine. Grenache Noir, sourced from old vines—some over a century old—dominates the blend, complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre, which add freshness and body. With yields carefully controlled at around 30 to 32 hl/ha, this cuvée reveals beautiful fruit concentration and a true expression of its terroir.
Viticulture and Winemaking
Hand-harvesting preserves the grapes’ full integrity. Some of the clusters are vinified whole, imparting freshness and lightness to the wine, while fermentation with indigenous yeasts promotes an authentic expression of the terroir. Aging continues for 14 to 18 months in concrete tanks and old oak casks, without fining or filtration, to preserve the full richness of the fruit and the finesse of the wine.
Gigondas .1871 Les Jardinières 2024 | Gour de Chaulé: The Sommelier’s Review
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
This 2024 reveals an elegant side of Gigondas, prioritizing finesse over power. Whole-cluster fermentation and native yeasts foster a style full of freshness, evoking more the delicacy of certain Burgundy wines than the structure of the most powerful Rhône reds. The century-old Grenache vines bring depth and complexity without excessive extraction. Already promising, this wine has excellent aging potential and will benefit from cellaring. When young, decanting for one hour at approximately 16°C will allow its aromas to fully unfold.
The Nose
The nose reveals notes of morello cherry and raspberry, accented by a subtle hint of spice. Peony adds a delicate floral nuance, while a subtle limestone minerality evokes the marl of the terroir. The wine as a whole stands out for its freshness, precision, and lightness.
Palate
On the palate, the attack is supple and velvety, driven by the Grenache. The body unfolds generously, without heaviness, supported by fine, silky tannins. A lovely mineral tension animates the finish and elegantly prolongs the tasting experience. The wine combines fullness and freshness in a remarkable balance.
