The Saint Nicolas estate is located at the western end of the Loire River, near Les Sables d’Olonne. Thierry Michon, the winemaker, settled in the Brem-sur-Mer area with the goal of producing great wines in a little-known appellation. He has succeeded in this challenge.
Thierry Michon ’s vineyards have been situated between the forest and the ocean since the 1960s. They are planted on soil composed of schist, quartz, and clay, which is particularly well-suited to the grape varieties planted by Patrice, Thierry Michon’s father.
All of the estate’s vineyards have been cultivated using biodynamic methods since 1995.
Thierry Michon constantly seeks to expand his winemaking knowledge and seeks advice, particularly from the world’s greatest winemakers such as Lalou Bize-Leroy, Anne-Claude Leflaive, and many others.
The wines are produced with his two sons, Antoine and Mickaël, and rank among the best wines of the Loire. The white cuvées, Les Clous and Le Haut des Clous, possess a minerality worthy of the greatest Chenin Blancs of the Loire.
The “Reflets” cuvée is a luscious, juicy red wine made from a blend of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. “Le Poiré” is an exceptional Négrette, one of the best in France.
The La Grande Pièce and Soleil de Chine vintages round out the range of this estate, which we consider a must-visit in the Loire.
When tasting the wines of Domaine Saint Nicolas, each cuvée delivers a real “wow factor.” It’s clear that this small vineyard in the Fiefs Vendéens has a very bright future ahead of it.
