Perched on the heights of the Terrasses du Larzac, overlooking the Hérault valley, the Montcalmès wine estate extends over 30 hectares of vines at an altitude of 400 meters, on the plateau that gives it its name. Founded and run by Frédéric Pourtalié, this wine estate is now recognized as a major player in the southern Languedoc region, thanks to its respectful approach to the vine and its constant quest for a balance between tradition and modernity.

The story of Montcalmès began in the late 1990s, when Frédéric Pourtalié, who had trained at legendary wine estates such asAlain Graillot, La Grange des Pères and Gérard Gauby, decided to return to his native land. Driven by a deep attachment to this rugged and singular terroir, he decided to set up his own winery in Puéchabon, in an area that was still little recognized at the time, but whose immense potential he could already see. His aim: to bring out the full richness of these limestone and stony soils. Nearly thirty years later, the wine estate continues this quest with a clear vision: to produce wines of pure expression, where each plot and each grape variety tells the story of the breathtaking Larzac landscape. This privileged setting is marked by thermal amplitudes, a direct consequence of the Mediterranean influences and mountain coolness that shape this terroir. On soils composed mainly of limestone and rounded pebbles, the vines of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Marsanne and Roussanne benefit from ideal conditions for the slow ripening of the grapes.

Frédéric Pourtalié instills a winemaking philosophy at Montcalmès that favors simplicity and authenticity. With this in mind, he chose to apply organic viticulture from the outset, minimizing human intervention to let nature express itself fully. No over-ripening, no gimmicks, just meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar to preserve the freshness and purity of the fruit. Ageing, often lengthy in foudres or barrels, respects the wine's natural structure without altering it. The result is wines that stand out for their elegance, finesse, great drinkability when young and their ability to age gracefully.

From powerful, well-balanced reds to fresh whites, each bottle is an invitation to travel to the heart of authentic Languedoc. The Terrasses du Larzac red cuvée is the soul of the wine estate. A harmonious blend of Syrah, Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre, it embodies Frédéric's vision: racy elegance, juicy substance, polished tannins and structuring freshness. The long ageing of 24 months in old barrels allows the aromas to meld, without ever dominating the fruit. This critically acclaimed cuvée is one of Languedoc's greatest reds.

The wine estate also produces an exclusive white Montcalmès cuvée, for which it relies on the richness and complexity of Marsanne and Roussanne, which flourish in the coolest plots of the vineyard. The fruit of long ageing in old barrels and demi-muis, this sunny, well-balanced wine seduces with its silky texture, aromas of ripe white fruit and almond blossom, and a lingering, saline finish. It brilliantly demonstrates the potential of Languedoc whites when grown on fresh terroirs and worked with precision.

Without making a fuss, without giving in to fashions, Frédéric Pourtalié has built up a unique style, combining finesse, depth and energy, which inspires respect and admiration beyond the borders of Larzac. His determination to elevate the Languedoc to the forefront of France's great terroirs makes Montcalmès a benchmark to be reckoned with.
