Today, Domaine Maxime Magnon is one of the most distinctive names in the Corbières vineyards of the Languedoc region. And yet, nothing predestined this Burgundian by birth to come and reinvent the region with such sensitivity. Having worked with Philippe Valette in Burgundy, Thierry Allemand in Cornas, and Beaujolais winemakers such as Jean Foillard and Yvon Métras, Maxime Magnon settled in 2002 in Villeneuve-les-Corbières, a wild corner of the Corbières Massif, where vines stand side by side with garrigues.
On just ten hectares, he cultivates Grenache Noir, Gris and Blanc, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault with the rigor typical of organic viticulture, but above all with an almost intuitive attention to the plant and its environment. There are no synthetic inputs or machinery in the vineyards. The 15-hectare wine estate is worked entirely by hand and with a caterpillar. After the harvest and until spring, flocks of sheep, donkeys and cows graze in the vineyards, promoting microbial activity and biodiversity.
In the winery, the perfectly ripe grapes, sorted in the vineyard by hand harvesting, undergo gentle winemaking with indigenous yeasts and, above all, no added sulfites (with very rare exceptions). For ageing, Maxime Magnon draws inspiration from his Burgundian heritage, favoring old barrels and foudres - never new wood. The result: wines of rare freshness in a Mediterranean climate, where the winemaker's hand serves only to reveal the expression of fruit, soil and substance.
The Maxime Magnon wine estate range asserts a strong, innovative Languedoc identity. In reds, Rozeta combines finesse and freshness, Campagnès expresses pure, intense and structured Carignan, and Saint Jacques seduces with its bright fruit. In white, La Bégou blends roundness and brilliance, while L'Estrade embodies a new Languedoc elegance.
Far from technical standards, the Maxime Magnon wine estate claims to be a free, demanding wine. He favors an intuitive approach, at the crossroads of Beaujolais (freshness, fine winemaking) and Burgundy (precision, terroir). An adept of manual pressing to maintain a direct link with the grapes, he adapts his ageing in old Burgundy barrels or concrete vats to bring out their full potential. An artisanal approach, where each vintage is a unique proposition, never static, always expressive.
Today, discerning connoisseurs scrutinize every vintage release, and rightly so. For behind the apparent simplicity of his labels lies a rare winemaker who combines the best of his background with the raw energy of the Corbières. Maxime Magnon doesn't just make Languedoc wines. He recounts the beauty of a place far from preconceived images, and an idea of wine that hits the nail on the head.
