Wine Description

The "Grotte Alte" cuvée from the Arianna Occhipinti wine estate is an exceptional Sicilian red wine from the Vittoria terroir. This wine is classified as DOCG Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the only DOCG in Sicily, reflecting its prestigious status. The name "Grotte Alte" refers to the limestone ridges on which the wine estate is located, at around 280 meters above sea level. The 40-year-old vines are rooted in soils composed of red clay and sand on a limestone substratum, benefiting from a dual Mediterranean and mountain influence. This unique combination gives the wine a distinctive minerality and remarkable aromatic complexity.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : This cuvée is a blend of equal parts Nero d'Avola and Frappato, two native grape varieties emblematic of the region. The grapes are harvested by hand when fully ripe, then vinified in the traditional way. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, followed by prolonged maceration to extract aromas and fine tannins. Ageing takes place for 32 months in large 25 hectoliter Slovenian oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop its structure and complexity while preserving its balance.

The nose is intense and complex, revealing aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, accompanied by delicate floral notes and subtle spices.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with elegant tannins and remarkable freshness. Fruity flavors blend harmoniously with mineral and saline nuances, the signature of the limestone terroir. The finish is long and persistent, marked by finesse and aromatic depth that invite contemplation.
