Chiara Boschis: The Story of a Prestigious Wine Estate
Here is a winemaker who speaks from the heart. Her career was predestined, as Chiara Boschis was born into the world of wine. Her ancestors founded the prestigious Giacomo Borgogno wine estate in Barolo in 1761, and her family managed the winery until Borgogno was sold in 2008.
Before becoming a winemaker, Chiara studied in Turin; then, after gaining her first professional experience at a consulting firm, she chose to follow her calling to Barolo.
In 1980, the legendary owner of the E. Pira winery in Barolo passed away without an heir. Since Gigi’s two sisters were close friends of the Boschis-Borgogno family, they asked them for help with winemaking. In 1981, Chiara—though still a student in Turin—convinced her parents to take out a mortgage to purchase the E. Pira winery and vineyard.
A few years passed during which her family managed production at Pira while she completed her studies and gained professional experience in Turin.
In 1990, after spending a few years discovering and tasting wines with the Barolo Boys, Chiara’s determination was at its peak. She took the reins of the E. Pira winery and embarked on a bold and unconventional path by practicing green harvesting, shorter fermentations, and the use of French oak barrels.
Chiara Boschis and her wine estate, E. Pira & Figli, now own eleven hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Barolo, Serralunga, and Montforte d’Alba. As the first female winemaker in the Langhe—and despite coming from a family of “Barolisti”—she had to overcome numerous obstacles in the 1990s to establish herself and gain the recognition needed to earn that title.
As the first wine estate with plots on the prestigious Cannubi terroir to convert to organic farming, Chiara didn’t stop there. She has worked tirelessly in recent years to convince the rest of the producers to go organic!
Her wines are masterpieces of finesse and elegance, endowed with magnificent body. From Barbera d’Alba to Barolo Cannubi, each wine embodies a terroir, an intensity, a richness, a soul… The tasting speaks for itself and reflects both the greatness of the grape variety and the terroir through its unusual complexity and depth.
