Long description
The history of the Domaine de La Taille aux Loups began not with a winemaker, but with a conviction. Jacky Blot 's intimate, visionary conviction: that the forgotten hillsides of Montlouis sur Loire have the potential to rival the greatest white wines of the Loire and, why not, of France. When he took over the wine estate in the 1990s, then a modest 7-hectare property, he turned it into a laboratory for precision, respect for natural balance and the quest for great wine. Bold to the end, he chose to focus exclusively on Chenin, working with organic viticulture and plot-by-plot winemaking over long ageing periods. His gamble paid off, as he restored the Loire appellation to its former glory.
Behind this renaissance lies a simple philosophy: let the vines speak for themselves. Today, La Taille aux Loups covers almost 25 hectares, mainly in Montlouis sur Loire, with a few plots in Vouvray. Each parcel is managed with artisanal rigor, vinified separately to reflect the uniqueness of the soil, whether clay-limestone, flint or flinty clay. There's no artificial search for style here: the winemaker's hand accompanies the expression of the terroir without forcing it. Jacky Blot has passed on this approach with the same exacting standards to his son Jean-Philippe Blot, now at the head of the wine estate, perpetuating his father's pioneering spirit while injecting a new sensibility since his father's sudden death in May 2023.
The cuvées are like a panorama of the Loire landscape. In Montlouis sur Loire, Clos de Mosny, from a south-facing monopole parcel of old Chenin vines, reveals a sunny yet taut face of this grape variety, capable of enduring the years with nobility. Alongside it, the cuvée Venise, born of vines planted on sand and light clay, offers a more ethereal, almost crystalline version of Chenin. Triple Zéro, also available in rosé, is a natural sparkling wine with no added sugar, reflecting the purity of the fruit. Other cuvées, such as Rémus and Cuvée des Loups, illustrate the diversity and richness of the terroirs cultivated by the wine estate.
In Vouvray, Les Hauts de Husseau takes on a chalkier, sunnier fullness. The Clos Michet and Clos de la Bretonnière parcel cuvées take the theme even further: here, each bottle tells a story of place, vintage and patience.
At La Taille aux Loups, we don't talk about technique, we talk about resonance. Each cuvée echoes the terroir from which it springs, without fudge or compromise. Here, Chenin achieves a rare diversity of expression, between crystalline brilliance, fruity freshness and saline depth. These are lacy wines, made for laying down as well as for immediate enjoyment.
