Long description
The Le Soula wine estate embodies a visionary project born in the heart of Fenouillèdes, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, at the crossroads of the Côtes Catalanes and Occitanie regions. Nestled between 400 and 600 meters above sea level, the vineyards benefit from a unique climate, both Mediterranean and mountainous, offering ideal conditions for vines averaging 50 years old. This high-altitude terroir, shaped by winds and thermal contrasts, produces cuvées of great freshness, marked by natural tension and pure expression of fruit.
The story of Domaine Le Soula began in the 1990s, when Roy Richards and Mark Walford imported Gérard Gauby 's wines for the English market. Mark Walford was convinced that the high-altitude terroirs of Fenouillèdes held real potential for producing high-quality wines. In 2001, they joined forces with this emblematic winemaker to create the Le Soula wine estate in Saint-Martin de Fenouillet. From the very first winemakings, the white and red cuvées acquired their reputation as pure wines, full of energy and character.
In 2014, Wendy Wilson joined the adventure. Trained between the Loire and the United States, she works alongside Gérard Gauby to bring about a paradigm shift in local viticulture, towards greater finesse, expression of terroirs and respect for the living. In 2016, she took over from Gérard and further developed the already demanding approach of the wine estate. In the vineyard as in the cellar, everything is designed to preserve natural balance: the 22 hectares are cultivated biodynamically, winemaking is carried out with indigenous yeasts, without fining or filtration, and ageing is extended in foudres or demi-muids to reveal without masking.
The richness of the wine estate also lies in the diversity of its grape varieties, which shines through in its cuvées. The Soula red, centered on Syrah, Carignan and Grenache Noir , combines depth, freshness and elegance in a pure, digestible style.
In white, the wine estate is distinguished by an original distribution: Macabeu, Grenache Blanc and Malvoisie du Roussillon rub shoulders with Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Vermentino in complex, taut cuvées. Le Soula blanc is a full-bodied, taut white for ageing, with energy running through it. And the Trigone range, made from several vintages, favors fruit, balance and accessibility, without ever betraying the signature of the wine estate. As for the cuvées parcellaires, they reveal, with rare precision, the singularity of Fenouillèdes soils, like a sensitive X-ray of the landscape.
