A Family Legacy of Passion and History

In the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, the history of Domaine de Villaine is rooted in a terroir shaped centuries ago by the monks of Cluny Abbey. These medieval pioneers were the first to cultivate vines in the region, laying the foundation for a winemaking tradition that respects the soil and all living things—a precious legacy that continues to nourish every row of vines to this day.

It was in this setting steeped in history thatAubert de Villaine, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, settled in Bouzeron in the early 1970s with his wife Pamela. Driven by a desire to revive a neglected grape variety,the golden Aligoté, they carefully selected the most promising plots and set to work. Their patient and passionate work restored this grape variety to prominence, culminating in 1997 with the creation of the Bouzeron appellation—the only one in Burgundy dedicated exclusively to Aligoté doré.

In 2001, Pierre de Benoist, Aubert’s nephew, took up the torch. True to the family spirit, he expanded the wine estate by exploring new terroirs such as Mercurey, Rully, and Saint-Aubin, while ensuring that viticulture remained respectful of nature and the soil, closely aligned with biodynamic principles.

This is why the wine estate practices organic viticulture closely aligned with biodynamics, without excessive intervention. Work in the vineyard is meticulous and guided by natural cycles, promoting biodiversity and soil health. Every intervention aims to strengthen this essential harmony to produce grapes of great purity, which are harvested by hand.

Fermentation takes place in open tanks or barrels, often using native yeasts and without the addition of commercial yeasts, to allow the terroir’s natural character to fully express itself.

Extraction is kept light: no aggressive maceration or over-ripening. Careful control of skin contact helps preserve freshness and finesse, rather than seeking raw power. Malolactic fermentation often occurs naturally, contributing to the wines’ roundness and balance. Ageing takes place primarily in oak barrels, often older ones, to impart structure without overpowering the aromas. This long and patient process is essential for refining the texture and gently integrating the oak, while respecting the unique character of each vineyard plot.

Villaine wine estate draws its richness from the diversity of its terroirs, typical of the Côte Chalonnaise, where each plot tells a unique story. In the village of Bouzeron, the clay-limestone soils mixed with marl provide the perfect setting for the golden Aligoté, which fully expresses its mineral freshness and finesse there.

The wine estate also extends into the neighboring appellations of Mercurey, Rully, Santenay, and Saint-Aubin, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay find varied soils combining clay, limestone, and marl, allowing them to reveal their finest nuances.

The mosaic of vineyard plots, including several Premier Cru sites, results in remarkable aromatic richness and complexity.

At Domaine de Villaine, each cuvée embodies the philosophy of meticulous work that respects a terroir dating back centuries.

Among the reds, the Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise La Digoine and La Fortune showcase the finesse and freshness of Pinot Noir characteristic of the region. On the Mercurey vineyards, the Les Montots cuvée showcases all the power and density of Pinot Noir, carried by a rare elegance and intense fruit, true to the assertive character of this cru.

Among the whites, the Bouzeron stands out for its crystalline purity and liveliness, breaking with the preconceived notions that once confined the golden Aligoté to a secondary role.

The Rully 1er Cru Grésigny, Rabourcé, Les Margotés, and Montpalais offer a rich and nuanced palette of Chardonnay expressions, while the Rully 1er Cru Champs Cloux and Cloux embody the delicacy and complexity of Pinot Noir on this exceptional terroir.

Finally, the Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Perrières, with its refined minerality and delicate balance, is a Chardonnay worthy of Burgundy’s greatest expressions.
